Most people know about the Google maps feature called "street view", where you pop your focus all the way in to a 360 degree panorama of the address you type in. But, how many of you knew that Google street view is now offered in quite exotic locations - for armchair exploration. Here is a list of the top 5:
- You can now surf the cyberseas to check out the Galapagos Islands. Members of the Google Maps team, in partnership with the Galapagos National Park and the Charles Darwin Foundation, lugged their 360-degree camera to 30 different locations across the islands.
- In partnership with the Sustainable Amazon Foundation, Google took pictures of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil, to highlight its environment as well as the indigenous people who live there.
- The Google Maps team took 12 days to make it to the base camp of Mt. Everest in Nepal/Tibet (fighting altitude sickness as they hiked more than 70 miles (113 kilometers).
- Last year, Google unveiled their 360-degree views from underwater at the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. It took those pictures in association with the Catlin Seaview Survey, which used a specially designed underwater camera.
- Google street views of the Grand Canyon are breathtaking. To capture these shots, the Google team put on 40 lb. backpacks carrying a 15-lens camera system that could grab shapshots during their hike. They also placed more than 9,500 panoramas of the area on Google Maps.
